There is a lot to be said about the Analogue Sunset, but in practical terms we can narrow it down to two main implications. The first implication is that as of December 31, 2010 the analogue outputs of high definition sources such as Blu-Ray players are limited by law to only output low resolution video for protected content. This means that if you're not using a digital connection such as HDMI, you're not getting the high quality video available on your Blu-Ray disc. By 2013 Blu-Ray players will stop displaying HDCP protected content through their analogue outputs altogether.
The bigger implication for boardrooms and classrooms alike is that by 2015 the VGA connector we know so well will disappear from all new latops. Chipset manufacturers AMD and Intel as well as hardware brands including Lenovo, Dell, Samsung and LG have already set the death date for the VGA video format.
This means that now is the time to consider upgrading your audio visual infrastructure to support the digital formats of the future - HDMI and Display Port. Already we are starting to see VGA connectors dropping off some new laptop models. To ensure that all your AV users can connect to your system, you need to begin supporting digital connections to your projectors and displays.
